Safety, Autonomy and the Art of Building Teams

Working in several industries have helped me to channel my management skill towards the transportation industry. Construction, Aerospace, Electronics, Oil and Gas Terminals and now Fuel transportation have helped me to understand those that are part of my teams. In 1992, I wrote my thesis for my Masters on developing Self Directed Work Teams. I still believe that all employees need to be allowed to make decisions. If they do not make correct decisions, then that is the time for one on one discussions with the employee but not criticism. This is the time to enrich the team member. Listen to the team members and utilize their ideas with credit going back to the teams. Never be afraid to say you are mistaken or wrong.

"Safety is the number one decision maker. Never let safety become a side thought."

The Operational Realities of Fuel Transportation

As a Director with all under my direction, safety is the number one decision maker. Never let safety become a side thought. Efficiency is critical for all members of the team to remain cost effective. Efficiency is a trait that becomes a part of all team members’ movements and will lead to cost savings and increased profit. The larger and more complex aspects of the transportation network allows for cross team work and the opportunity for increased profit.

Beyond the people equation, transportation leaders today are facing increasing fuel costs, increasing maintenance costs, increased labor costs, increased regulatory costs and threat of loss of work if costs are not cut.

Technology is providing some of the most practical responses to the way transportation and logistics teams operate in recent times. Enjoying the general use of dual facing cameras in trucks with AI to discuss with the driver, for instance, allows instant ability to call out rogue drivers who are not following the rules. Accidents are one of the highest costs facing the trucking industry.
